WCP Press Release #1 (July 1, 2009)

The first batch of press releases -- an admittedly small batch at only 4 copies -- went out on July 1 to bloggers I regularly read and/or have dealt with in the past. In retrospect I probably should have taken the time to write the press release in the third person. It sounds more professional that way I suppose. Heidi MacDonald (a press release recipient) wrote a good post on PR. You can read it here. I incorporated a few of her suggestions into this first press release and my About Me page had its genesis with her post as well.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cartoonist Begins Project to Reveal Financial Success or Failure of New Web Comic in Real Time

I'm going to spend a year trying to find a way to make a living drawing web comics (current web comic: Java Town). I intend to share on my blog, "Now What?," financial information, traffic data and anything else that seems educational or useful to track my progress (or lack thereof). The quote from today's blog post (reproduced below) describes it best:

"Can a web cartoonist make a real living? That's what I want to know. And I'm not just being nosy. We are in the midst of a transition period between the Old World of Print and the New Frontier of Pixels. And that's fine. I love Print but Digital is great too. I just want to find a way to make the kinds of comics I like in this new realm and make a living at the same time. The Web Comic Project is my year-long attempt, starting today, to share publicly my successes (and failures) as I attempt to find my way to a profitable path."
